Dr. Phil Welsh, PT, DPT, ATC is a licensed physical therapist and athletic trainer in North Carolina. He obtained his Doctor of Physical Therapy (2016) and Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training (2014) from Boston University magna cum laude.

Phil grew up with soccer (aka football) close to his heart as a fan of both Reading FC and Manchester United. He worked as a part-time athletic trainer for the Charlotte FC Academy from 2021-2022, helping to recondition high-level athletes and improve sport performance so they can be promoted to the professional level.

Phil has 7+ years of experience working with patients of all ages, activity levels, and conditions, including 2 years of home health visits.

Phil is passionate about getting active youth and adults back to the activities they love, through both rehabilitation and prevention. Phil enjoys the psychosocial and motivational aspects of physical therapy and sports performance, frequently saying the road to recovery is at least half mental.

Additionally, Dr. Phil Welsh earned his FIFA Diploma in Football Medicine in 2021. He does his best to attend every Charlotte FC home match so you may see him there!

Dr. Phil Welsh’s professional story began on April 15th, 2013. As a medical volunteer at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, Phil was only about 50 yards away from the first explosion. He spent the remainder of the afternoon treating and triaging the hundreds of injured athletes and spectators, some of whom were suffering from traumatic amputations of their lower limbs. This experience gave Phil a fresh appreciation for teamwork and community, something he appreciates every day. He volunteers each Patriot’s Day in Boston at the finish line medical tent and will continue to do so until his hospice nurse says he can’t anymore.

While at Boston University, Phil founded and captained the men’s club soccer team, playing in tournaments across the country. Since moving to Charlotte in 2018, he now enjoys playing soccer in Charlotte adult leagues, running in local races, including the 2022 Charleston Marathon, and traveling. He lives with his wife (Eliza) and son (Simon) in the Dilworth neighborhood of Charlotte with their two cats, Linus and Ember.
